Kill List research

WARP X:
It was founded in 2005. 16 June 2010, registered office in Sheffield Digital Campus.  It is sister company to Warp films. It produces feature films in the UK with budgets £400,000 and £800,000. The studio provides a format for new film directors to create films for the first time. This will be on a lower budget scale with less exceptions for high box office revenue. The studio started off with support from organisations from Warp Films, Film Four, UK Film Council, EM Media and Screen Yorkshire.
The intention of this film studio is to add energy and vitality to the British film industry. It has not produced many films. Many of the films that it has produced have been successful and have either won or been nominated for awards like BAFTA.

Studio Canal:
The company was founded in 1988 by Pierre Lescure as a spin-off. The original function was to focus on French and European productions, but later made strategic deals with American production companies
It has strong links to Universal Studios (Studiocanal and Universal Studios were owned by the same company between 2000 and 2004, hence StudioCanal co-produced a fair number of Universal's films). The biggest box office hits for StudioCanal have been Terminator 2: Judgment Day which grossed US$519 million, Basic Instinct which grossed US$352 million and The Tourist which grossed US$278 million worldwide.
StudioCanal acquired film libraries from studios that either went defunct or had merged with it over the years. As a result, the company's library is the third-largest in the world, behind Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer respectively. The company's library includes many other film libraries.

Film Yorkshire:

Film Four :
It is owned by Channel Four Television Corporation. It is known for producing a large number of British films. Their first production was Walter which was released in 1982.It was re-branded as FilmFour, to coincide with the launch of a new Digital TV channel of the same name. Before it was named Channel Four Films or FilmFour International. The company cut its budget and staff significantly in 2002, due to mounting losses, and was re-integrated into the drama department of Channel 4. The name "Film4 Productions" was introduced in 2006 to tie in with the relaunch of the FilmFour broadcast channel as Film4.
UK Film Council:
This was a non-departmental public body set up in 2000 to develop and promote the film industry in the UK. It was constituted as a private company limited by guarantee, owned by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and governed by a board of 15 directors. It was funded from various sources including the National Lottery. It distributed more than £160m of lottery money to over 900 films. UKFC closed on 31 March 2011, with many of its functions passing to the British Film Institute. This had happened after 2009 when the UKFC had persuaded the government of the merits of creating a "single public body for film" - in which the UKFC proposed that the British Film Institute should be abolished while the UKFC would take over all its assets and funding. However the legal protections offered to English charities like the BFI, meant that its proposals were dismissed in a QC's report as being legally impossible.
In its own words, the aim of the UKFC was:
"To stimulate a competitive, successful and vibrant UK film industry and culture, and to promote the widest possible enjoyment and understanding of cinema throughout the nations and regions of the UK. The UKFC had a mandate that spans cultural, social and economic priorities
This represented a significant change from the UKFC's objectives when it was first established, when it stated its purpose was to create a "sustainable UK film industry".
Rook films: Kill list was its first production of a movie it had done.
Distributers:
Optimum Releasing (UK)-
This is also StudioCanal productions. As well as productions it also distributes films. It was named Optimum Releasing (UK) from 2009-2011.
When named Optimum, the company's image was that of a modern and independent distributor of new releases and back catalogues. Films were released under four strands: Optimum Releasing (new theatrical releases), Optimum Home Entertainment (new DVD and Blu-ray releases), Optimum Classic (DVD re-releases of back catalogue films), and Optimum World (new and back catalogue world cinema releases). The latter three appear to be still be in use, despite the company's name change.
Optimum released over 200 films a year and were one of the most prominent distributors in the UK independent film and world cinema market, since the closure of Tartan Films in 2008. Kill List, The Guard, and a re-release of Whisky Galore! were the last titles released under the Optimum Releasing banner. Optimum was acquired by StudioCanal,  in 2006.

In September 2011, the company was renamed StudioCanal UK. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Tyrannosaur, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, The Awakening, and W.E. were among the first films released under the new name.
IFC Midnight (US)-
The company is based in New York. It is owned by AMC Network.
It distributes independent films and documentaries under the IFC Films, Sundance Selects and IFC Midnight brands. It operates the IFC Centre.
IFC has several ventures in video on demand (VOD), available through cable television pay-per-view, Apple iTunes, and formerly Blockbuster's Movielink. In 2006, IFC Films began distributing some films to Apple iTunes.
in 2010, it was announced that IFC Films would be launching a division titled IFC Midnight, the division would focus on releasing horror, sci-fi, thrillers, erotic arthouse, and action.

30-50

Stereotypical Idea's about 30-50 (Middle Aged)
  • Workaholics
  • Stressed
  • Rushing about
  • Not with the times
  • No social life
  • Don't really care about aesthetics
  • Grumpy
  • Not in connection with their kids
  • Uncool and not really with the times

Paget Brewster who plays Emily Prentiss in criminal minds. Emily graduated from Yale before joining the FBI and had worked of ten years before working in the BAU of the FBI she is extremely well travelled, as she is fluent in Arabic , Spanish , French , Italian , Russian and Greek. Emily is someone who is middle aged in the series. She is extremely hardworking, basically a workaholic as she has very little time to socialise. She lives alone after her marriage broke down. She has been in some relationships throughout the series but unfortunately they haven't been able to last very long. Personality wise she always seems to be stressed out or worrying about something. While she can be fun on rare occasions at work, the majority of the time she is a very serious person and doesn't understand that it is ok to relax and let go at times. It has often been said to her that despite of her qualifications she mustn't let her emotions get the better of her as from time to time when she is in a crime scene she becomes emotionally involved with the victims with showing empathy and seems to take the crimes personally. She is a good person as she is always willing to put herself at risk in the hope of saving others.

Age

13-19

90210

The scene starts off with an establishing shot, this shows the atmosphere is full of teenager as the diegetic sound of a school bell goes off as it shows that they are still at school. The non-diegetic sounds occurring of loud guitars, being in rock style, this implies the troublesome of teenagers, preparing the audience for troubled teenager to occur in this clip. As Naomi and the teacher walk along the corridor, tracking shot is happening- this is to focus on the conversation as their background is blurred and camera is focused on them. This happens as Naomi, speaks to the teacher will a negative attitude which is submissive. Because she is a teenager this is excited for her from the audience. The targeted audience for this TV Drama is teenager so would see this a normal way to behave whereas if an older audience watched this they would associate it as bad news and the typical way for teenagers to behave as they have a stubborn attitude to older people as seen when Naomi speaks to the teacher. As a mid shot is used and the Naomi then snatches Mr Matthew's phone out of his hand as expected from a typical teenager like Naomi.
Further more in the clip, low angle is used to look up at the balcony at the students throwing paper aeroplanes everywhere. This is an efficient way of showing their rebellious act as teenagers. Following is a tracking shot eventually focusing on the girl running down the corridor amongst the people throwing paper everywhere. This is a match together as everyone in the scene are all acting the stereotypical teenage way of going against the rules.
Later on in the clip, Liam is with a girl and is constantly rejecting her. As the camera cuts into Annie heading towards them and looking at the couple. A cut into a mid shot of the couple getting close is used- this is showing their childish behaviour as he tries to get Annie jealous. Because they are teenagers of around 16-17 they are seen to have childish characterists in them as a sign of immaturity.

sexuality in tv dramas

The camera focus's on emily's face as she says "are you still awake" this implying that she hopes that she is awake because she is lonely. Being lonely in a way to try get her into a relationship. Through the whole scene non diegetic sound occurs. This sets the romantic scene being emily and alison building up sexual tension before anything happens. The camera throughout is at a high angle. This is to show both sides of emotions within their relationship- this is them both willing to be sexually active together.

The scene starts off with non diegetic sound which is lively and violets which sets romantic scene and also implying that Effy is visiting someone she loves. When freddie opens the door, the camera is at a low angle to look up at Freddie. In a straight relationship it is shown that the girl is always the one looking up at the men. This is what is shown in this clip. Straight after, it cuts into a high angle looking down at effy. This shows how the typical straight relationship is like- showing the gender that is dominant within a relationship being the men. After the first minute, close up is used throughout the sex scene to show how intense the atmosphere is.

Representation of Ethnicity

Black people:
Dixon Wilson- 90210

Olivia pope- scandal

mid shot is used  to show his body language and facial expression showing his rebellious behaviour of the typical black person. At the same time a crab shot is used to follow his movements as he heads out the door. The dialect currently in the scene is his parents speaking about him doing wrong things that leads to consequences. In terms of ethnicity it shows him going against the rules and going against what he's been told. He is represented to currently have an attitude of a gangster this meaning that he doesn't care about his actions. The lighting is darkened  to show he is up to no good and is rebellious.

White People:
President Fitzgerald - scandal

low angle is used throughout to show how dominate he is over the people he is speaking to.
The costume shows that he has a large amount of power as well as the dialect he uses. He has a powerful tone which suggests this.
Crab shot is used to show his importance the audience he is speaking to.

Chinese people:

Brook Soso - Orange is the new black

CLOSE UP- focus on what shes saying and in this case it is something stupid and the back is blurred. and the use of shot reverse shot is used to dshw pipers reaction of how stupid she sounds. - Chinese women are seen to be "ditzy". A cut then used to have close up to the woman listening to the conversation as she knows that she is an easy target for anything an example "bullying". She is spoken to by piper in a child like way suggesting she is a really ditzy person and the complete opposite of smart as Chinese people would be portrayed.

Asian People:
 Masood - Eastenders

opposite of being serious as they would be portrayed. shown in their clothing and their dialect as its not formal. EXAMPLE. seeing as push over. Long shot to show his body language as he walks with his hands in his pockets which is not very  formal or respectful. a cut is then used to transition into the scene of them misusing the trolley around the village.  They are protrayed as a rebel in this clip as they run away when they crash the trolley into the car.

improvement of donna

In the first clip, the scene opens with focus to Donna opening the drawer for her pills by using a close up. This at first does not draw too much attention to her condition as for her, as women could be taken for conception pills. On the other hand could draw attention to viewers, because of the amount of medication and what they look like that the character taking them is unwell and takes the medication on a daily basis for whatever their condition. Immediately after this, a cut is used to make the transition into a mid-shot and show that she is physically disabled representing the everyday life for them of taking medication on a daily basis which is not considered the "norm". Secondly, in the same clip when Fatboy enters the scene and the use of dialect start to represent disability furthermore when Fatboy says "not the way to treat a lady" and Donna responds with " I aint a lady Fat". This is awkward dialect being used by her as he tries to make humour out of her disability as self-defence as she feels vulnerable most of the time.   This is the way they would be represented normally in TV dramas as, this is what they'd expected to feel because they feel as if they are not normal to everyone else in their surroundings. In this whole scene, Donna is being represented in countertype way; disabled people are not usually seen as sexually active because they feel as if it is something only done by "normal" people and is not done by them. Where as the character of Donna is going against that as she has sex with Fatboy. This would not seen as the "normal" lifestyle for a woman who is disabled. Donna is seen to have a different attitude towards this and does not feel like she’s any different.

The second clip when Donna is speaking to Nancy; the conversation becomes argumentative and shot- reverse- shot is started to be used alongside close up shots towards Donna to show her reaction to the conversation as it is mostly likely to give her a traumatic shock.  Donna discriminates against Nancy by saying "not all men go for perfect blondes you know", Donna's attitude becomes cocky towards the subject of her and Fatboy as this can be because she wants to feel normal about the situation and not feel as if it is wrong because she is disabled to have sex. Representation of disability is seen here it shows that if they are physically disabled, they are the ones that are always going to be looked at or treated differently which causes them to have unpleasant behaviour to take pressure off themselves. For Donna to find out that Nancy has a disability herself, her reaction is focused on through the close up shots during the conversation, which her reaction is shown to be surprised and breath taken by the news.

In the next scene, the camera starts off in a mid-shot as Donna is making her way over to Nancy to apologist to her. Because of this shot, it suggests that they are on the same level and that they are both equal to each other. Eyeline Match is used during their conversation as they speak about their experience and again make their disability into humour which is a way for people who are disabled to find comfort in their condition or to speak about it.

PEER ASSESSMENT:
COMMENT: good understanding of the scene and explorations of possible representations of the character - well done!
IMPROVEMENT: try to link your analysis back to the question to make it more relevant. Also try to use more terminology within your explanations.

Representations in Supernatural

Age

The costume of the actor above, is a clear representation of the character's age. Which assumed by the audience that it is younger than the age of 16. This is represented through the camera work as a long shot is used to present the costume of the boy to the audience which shows his age. The Pajamas itself are seen childish and stereotypical of how boy under the age of 16 would wear for bed. Supporting that, is the long shot that shows his height telling us that he is at a young age along with his costume. The character's dialect also represents his age as he uses phrases like "daddy" in his speech, suggesting he is at a young age.
Shot reverse shot is used to show his innocence when he discovers his dad dead on the floor and doesn't know what to do. The shots go from him to the body.

Sexuality

The pole shows sexuality in it as well as the girl using it; this is a clear representation during this scene. The male gaze is represented through the costume of the girl as she is not wearing much. She is dressed in just a bra, short shorts and red boots. The red boots being worn to represent her sexiness, following that it represents danger coming towards her way.  The camera angle is at a high angle looking down at her, this emphasizing the sexual scene and atmosphere starting to be created.

Straight after, there is a low angle being shown as the man looking up at her and the women looking straight into his eyes in a sexually tense atmosphere. The edits used to make it as sexually intense as it is are cut in and cutaway. As it starts with cutaway when its being shot at a high angle then at a low angle and close up is a cut in, this is to make it increase tension.
Gender

Male:

The close up focus' on his facial features e.g beard. This is most common for  males to have them, therefore males are being represented. Furthermore,  it shows the man wearing a shirt and tie- stereo typically suited for males to wear.

In the Images below, it shows both genders smartly dressed, in both jeans and blazer. This is shown through a mid shot and a two shot. It implies that both genders are equal to each other within their roles because it does not stereotypical show a women in a dress and the man all suited up in trousers, a shirt and blazer. They are shown here to be both wearing similar clothing. This is the opposite of how TV Dramas would normally present both of the genders.

Match on action is used while the female is working towards the man to stop and turn around to see him on the sofa, this is made then goes to the normal representation of women of being the more caring gender, as it goes from the shot of showing them being equal to each other and dramatically back into the female gender being the one that tends to look after other people around them that they care about.

The episode is consumed mostly one gender which is the males. They are seen to be playing every position in TV dramas. For an example if it was to go by the PROPP theory, the male would be most of the roles. Therefore the are shown to be dominant against each other and aren't seen as weak as women would be presented as.

Because of the lack of women in this episode,  when they are shown on screen, they are presented in dominant manor, the way the men are within the episode. The men's weak characteristics are shown very few times like when they are dying. Which this is the opposite of how they should be represented as they should be especially if going by PROPP's theory, they would be expected to be the hero or villain and not the one that needs saving.

Female and Male Gaze

Gender gaze from MrsCmedia

Male Gaze

This is how women are seen;
by men
by women
by themselves.

This is the theory by Laura Mulvey that women should be have to be seen a certain way through the media. This is usually by the male's prospective.
Through this theory women can be objectified as a sexual object.
Female Gaze
This is how females look at  men. The male Gaze is the more powerful theory than the female gaze because it occurs more in society and is more obviously shown within media.

I think the male gaze is the strongly shown more than the female gaze. However both theories are shown a lot in media, one more obvious than the other which is the male gaze as this is seen in the inbetweeners trailer, in this it is more of the subject of the movie/trailer. I do not agree with these theories as  some women would be offended by these theories and being sexualised and objectified. For male gaze,  some women may not look at men in that way and may find it unattractive, this is the same for men on the view of women.

In this picture it shows female gaze as it is portraying how society and media represent men as and what they should look like. Ziggy is attractive, got a tan and has a fit body therefore this an example of the female gaze.

This clip shows a counter stereotype and therefore disagrees with the male and female gaze theories as it is not targeting men or women or any sexuality and is not showing what women and men  should look like being attractive with a nice toned body. This is the opposite of it.
